Listed from best to last favorite, most of these pizza joints consistently appear in the top listings for the Best Pizza in Manhattan, but these are really the ones that I actually return to over and over when old buddies come to town. The emphasis in judging the top pizza prioritizes the best pizza dough, freshest toppings, best Italian food and quality consistency over the decor and service. Most or all of these are kid and family friendly. I tend to avoid the ones which grow into tourist traps. Another great resource for Best Pizza in New York and beyond is the pizza blog http://slice.seriouseats.com/ I'm still searching for the brave restauranteur who will perfect the Pizza-In-A-Cup from the movie "The Jerk".

 Pizza Mezzaluna146 West Houston Street,NY,NY

Ingenious toppings on artisanal pizzas that I would not think to combine, and the best Tiramisu in NYC. Really fine dough, which in the hands of a true pizzaiolo from Naples, is transformed in wood fire brick ovens into food of the Gods. Mezzaluna is on a different level than the greasy slices served by John's Pizza or Joe's Famous Pizza and the other Bleecker Street pizza places in SoHo and West Greenwich Village. But brush up on your Italian, because the staff hails from the Old Country and even the Fashionista's sipping cafe at the bar are trying out their Italian. I usually just keep the menu, order take out and use the free pizza delivery for a fast office lunch.

Slice.SeriousEats.com gave this a smashing review with great pictures, too. http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2009/03/pizza-mezzuluna-greenwich-village-nyc.html
"Mezzaluna . . . specializes in pizza and features eight different kinds, but its trump card is really its bistro atmosphere(with lots of European-style cheek kissing, noise and tables)." -Women's Wear Daily

"Mezzaluna is the place to be . . . Best patio and sidewalk dining on a summer night with the kids, and the winning white clam pizza in New Haven. Zagat and other restaurant reviews seem to consistently say that Pepe's is the favorite and original pizza place, but I don't believe it.

 4.DiFara Pizza1424 Ave J, Brooklyn, NY 11230, USA

Yes, the wait is really long for this famous New York pizza, so get there early so you don't have to fight Japanese tourists. This famous Upper East Side Italian restaurant truly changed the direction of my life. I could not have gotten through medical school without the brick oven pizza and Italian seafood. The Mezzaluna Cookbook taught me the light Italian sauces from Rome, Tuscany, Northern and Southern Italy. "Mezzaluna is like a Fellini movie - it's crowded, lively, and sexy . . ." -- Women's Wear Daily

6.Patsy's2287 1st Ave, New York, NY 10035, USA

If you feel a little dangerous and lucky, try Patsy's in Harlem. Yes, unbelievable but true. Patsy's Restaurant a landmark East Harlem institution will be celebrating its 75th Anniversary by rolling back to the 1930s.

Patsy's first opened its New York City location at 2287-91 1st Avenue in 1933, having been the dream of a pair of Italian Immigrant newlyweds, Patsy and Carmella Lancieri. Patsy's established itself as a family style" old fashion type" neighborhood restaurant immediately. Positioning itself in the neighborhood, Patsy's catered to the growing population of Italian immigrants who longed for the cuisine of their fatherland in a casual family style atmosphere.

As a result, almost immediately, Patsy's atmosphere, style and cuisine began attracting many popular famous personalities. Actors and singers such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin and others became regulars. Famous New York Yankees, Phil Rizzutto, Joe Dimaggio and Yogi Berra made it a convenient stop. Elected Officials to include Rudy Guliani, Mike Bloomberg, Spiro Agnew and others visited after a day of vigorous campaigning.

Patsy's will be celebrating this momentous occasion by rolling back all its prices on its menu. Proclamations will be presented by the office of, New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, Congress Member Charlie Rangel, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Council Member Melissa Mark Viverito among others. We will enjoy music, food and yes, the traditional cutting of the cake. Happy Birthday Patsy's!

Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Time: Press Conference begins at 11:30 AM
Event begins at 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM
Location: 2287 First Avenue, New York
(117 - 118 Street 1st Avenue)
# # #

Patsy’s Pizza, an East Harlem staple since the Great Depression, ranks high on the list of New York’s so-called “legacy” pizzerias. Established by Pasquale “Patsy” Lancieri, who trained under pizza patriarch Gennaro Lombardi, Patsy’s has been churning out its thin and crispy, yet surprisingly chewy, coal-fired pies to generations of locals and pizza pilgrims. Known for its tangy sauce and creamy mozzarella (they offer both regular and fresh mozzarella), Patsy’s may be short on decor and service, but it more than makes up for it with what many consider to be one of the best pizza pies in the Big Apple.

While Patsy’s is a little bit out of the way, and is known for servers who basically tell you what you want (if you order two pies, they insist on bringing them out one at a time), the pain and sacrifice are immediately forgotten when that smoky, perfectly charred slice hits your lips for the for the first time.

Lancieri is also notable in the history of New York pizza for passing on his craft to his nephew, Patsy Grimaldi, who opened the award-winning Grimaldi’s Pizza many years later in Brooklyn.

While the Lancieris no longer own Patsy’s, and the name has since been franchised out to some less-than-stellar pizzerias, the original Patsy’s was bought by long-time employees of the Lancieri family who have carried on Patsy’s great pizza-making tradition.

Patsy’s doesn’t deliver unless your name is Frank Sinatra. Legend has it that Ol’ Blue Eyes would have Patsy's pies sent down to him at the Waldorf-Astoria, or send a plane from Los Angeles to pick up a few dozen pies for himself and the boys.

Located just off the East River, Grimaldi’s pies are a favorite among pizza aficionados due to their crispness and smoky coal-fired goodness.

Rated as the best in the city by Zagats six consecutive years running, Grimaldi’s is known for going light on the sauce and heavy on the fresh ingredients –- including mozzarella slices made on the premises –- producing a pizza that draws throngs of Manhattan converts across the bridge to the Brooklyn pizza Mecca.

While Grimaldi’s is small, and has a considerable wait on weekends, simply getting there can be an enjoyable adventure. Many New Yorkers cross the Brooklyn Bridge (which can be accessed from the City Hall subway stop) and stroll down for a pie on a warm day, followed by dessert at the Brooklyn Ice Cream factory, located a convenient block away on a pier that juts out into the East River and offers an unrivaled view of lower Manhattan.

While Grimaldi’s sells only whole pies (a “No Slices” sign is prominently displayed in the window), that’s usually not a problem since there are rarely any leftovers. Slices are so thin that customers often eat double the number of slices they would in a normal pizzeria (plus, the pizza is just that good). Be sure to wear your fat pants, because no one gets out of Grimaldi’s without a satisfied, full belly.

Have you been to Grimaldi’s? Click the EasyEdit button above to:

 Add a review

Post a photo of you dining at Grimaldi’s

 Recommend something from the menu

Is your favorite pizzeria missing? Click "add a new page" and start a page for it!

See also:

 Denino’s Pizza

 DiFara Pizzeria

 John’s of Bleecker Street

 Lombardi’s Pizza

 Patsy’s Pizza

 Totonno Pizzeria Napolitano

Gino's Restaurant & Pizzeria, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY

 7414 5th Avenue, Brooklyn NY 718-748-1698

Memories never fade when the taste equals that of 40 years earlier. Sasso is said to have learned the pizza trade directly from Gennaro Lombardi, who opened the nation’s first pizzeria in Little Italy in 1905, and the Sasso family continues to operate this cozy little dive.

As one of the few coal-fired pizzerias left in the city, John’s is celebrated for its perfect crust and smoked sausage, and draws throngs of locals and tourists alike who come in search of the perfect New York pizza.

While you usually have to wait outside for a table at John’s, Bleecker Street is a favorite spot for people-watching, and you may just catch sight of the many famous actors, artists, and musicians who call Greenwich Village home (you may even wind up seated next to one of them, because John’s is a prime locale for celeb-spotting).

While the Sasso family has opened up a small chain of John’s throughout the city, many consider original John’s to be THE New York pizza place, because of its pedigree and location in one of the most storied neighborhoods in New York.

I recommend the sausage and mushroom pizza, and make sure to order more than you think you need; it's THAT good!
And you must get a pitcher of beer to wash it down.

Have you been to John’s? Click the EasyEdit button above to:

 Add a review

Post a photo of you dining at John’s

 Recommend something from the menu

Is your favorite pizzeria missing? Click "add a new page" and start a page for it!

Johns is truly the best pizza in NYC.

See also:

 Denino’s Pizza

 DiFara Pizzeria

 Grimaldi’s Pizza

 Lombardi’s Pizza

 Patsy’s Pizza

 Totonno Pizzeria Napolitano

L'asso

"EAT THE PIZZA"
L'asso 192 Mott Street @ Kenmare 212-219-2353 How to Get There: 6 to Spring St B, D, F to Bowery N/R to Prince Hours Mon-Wed 12pm-11:30am “We Deliver”

L'asso NYC

Proudly sitting on the corner of Mott Street and Kenmare at the southern end of Nolita, L'asso has become the area’s newest beloved neighborhood restaurant. But once the pies start arriving, lightly coated in olive oil but not too greasy, you’ll forget that you have to make the same journey to get home.

Denino’s trademark is its meatball, onions, and ricotta pizza (which Frank Bruni, the New York Times restaurant critic, called “gloppy and chaotic,” though he gave Denino’s -– and the adventure of getting to Denino’s –- a overall favorable review). Denino's has changed significantly from the early days, gone is the 60's decor and cramped dining room, lit by christmas lights hidden behind faux wood shades. While much larger than it's previous incarnation, it's now far more worth getting take out, as the fantastic ambiance that made the tavern great, is gone. Since 1924, New Yorkers have braved a lengthy subway commute to sample Totonno’s famous coal-fired pizzas.

While the staff had been described (perhaps generously) as "gruff" -- Totonno, who has passed away, was rumored to be a legendary hothead who would often quarrel with the staff –- and the only menu is on a board above the oven, pizza gourmands insist Totonno’s is an occupant of any list of New York’s finest pizza places.

While Coney Island is quite a commute for most New Yorkers, many choose to make a day out of a trip to Totonno’s, grabbing a hot dog at Nathan’s, cooling on the beach until the meat-sweats subside, then taking a ride on the Cyclone before heading to Totonno’s for an early dinner, and then head over to Keyspan park to watch the Brooklyn Cyclones play. You’ll have plenty of time to digest on the 90-minute-plus subway ride back to Manhattan.

Have you been to Totonno’s? Click the EasyEdit button above to:

Add a review

Post a photo of you dining at Totonno’s

Recommend something from the menu

Is your favorite pizzeria missing? Click "add a new page" and start a page for it!

See also:

Denino’s Pizza

DiFara Pizzeria

Grimaldi’s Pizza

John’s of Bleecker Street

Lombardi’s Pizza

Patsy’s Pizza

toppings

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Sarafina

There is no abstract available for this page revision.
