TotonnoTotonno Pizzeria Napolitano
1525 Neptune Avenue
Coney Island, Brooklyn
On the web: http://www.totonnos.com/Pizza.html

Totonno’s is a purebred New York pizzeria, founded by Anthony “Totonno” Pero, one of the pizziolas who trained under Gennaro Lombardi at the original New York pizzeria in Little Italy. Since 1923,1924, New Yorkers have braved a lengthy subway commute to sample Totonno’s famous coal-fired pizzas.

While the staff had been described (perhaps generously) as "gruff" -- Totonno, who has passed away, was rumored to be a legendary hothead who would often quarrel with the staff –- and the only menu is on a board above the oven, pizza gourmands insist Totonno’s is an occupant of any list of New York’s finest pizza places.

While Coney Island is quite a commute for most New Yorkers, many choose to make a day out of a trip to Totonno’s, grabbing a hot dog at Nathan’s, cooling on the beach until the meat-sweats subside, then taking a ride on the Cyclone before heading to Totonno’s for an early dinner, and then head over to Keyspan park to watch the Brooklyn Cyclones play. You’ll have plenty of time to digest on the 90-minute-plus subway ride back to Manhattan.
