Word to the hungry:
Be patient, as all pizzas are made to order

Opened in 1929 by John Sasso, John’s has become as much a part of Greenwich Village as the arch in Washington Square Park. Sasso is said to have learned the pizza trade directly from Gennaro Lombardi, who opened the nation’s first pizzeria in Little Italy in 1905, and the Sasso family continues to operate this cozy little dive.

As one of the few coal-fired pizzerias left in the city, John’s is celebrated for its perfect crust and smoked sausage, and draws throngs of locals and tourists alike who come in search of the perfect New York pizza.

While you usually have to wait outside for a table at John’s, Bleecker Street is a favorite spot for people-watching, and you may just catch sight of the many famous actors, artists, and musicians who call Greenwich Village home (you may even wind up seated next to one of them, because John’s is a prime locale for celeb-spotting).

While the Sasso family has opened up a small chain of John’s throughout the city, many consider original John’s to be THE New York pizza place, because of its pedigree and location in one of the most storied neighborhoods in New York.

I recommend the sausage and mushroom pizza, and make sure to order more than you think you need; it's THAT good!
And you must get a pitcher of beer to wash it down.

We went in for a pizza with pepperoni and garlic. It was delicious.
We also ordered a pitcher of Yuengling beer which went well with our meal.
I did order a side of meatballs -- pass. I am not a picky person, but the meatballs I would not recommend, not flavorful enough, too dry, and too salty. Sorry. However, I got back to California and have been craving John's of Bleecker for 11 months now! Pepperoni and garlic pizza was very good. : )
Anonymous The best Pizza in NY?... maybe... poor New Yorkers! 1 Apr 11 2009, 5:31 PM EDT by peppertree5706

Hi all, I stumbled across this thread while looking for a nice pizza place to visit here in Sydney , Australia on the occasion of my daughters birthday. In February 2008 we were in NYC and heard so much about Johns of Bleecker St that we just had to give it a go. As mentioned previously we had to line up with all these excited customers from all over the US of A and abroad. A fun experience which left us in hungry anticipation of our upcoming pizza. Finally we were seated amid the rustic ambience of Johns trying to enjoy a very average Californian wine as we ordered from the menu. Can't remember what we ordered as the "pie" that came out was equally forgettable. Looking around, it seemed that everyone else thought that the "King was indeed wearing new clothes"
In other words my friends, the food was crap, it was tasteless, overcooked and unfinishable. The pastry was dry, the toppings tired, the sauce invisible. I would expect a pizza like that in a third rate takeaway next to the Ingleburn Inn. If that is what you consider a great pizza, please do yourselves a favour and travel to Naples, Italy or Sydney, Australia to remind yourself of how good, real Italian cooking can be........oh, did I mention the coffee?..........
