Denino’s Pizza524 Port Richmond Ave.
Staten Island
Denino’s motto is “In crust we trust,” and for those who brave the interminable journey from Manhattan to get to this Staten Island outpost, that crust makes the trip almost worth it.
From the outside, Denino’s does not look much like a culinary destination –- it looks like a house -– and your first glimpse inside, of a bland, dingy bar that looks like it serves the sort of person who plays a lot of Keno, and a bland and well-lit dining room that looks like the sort of place you go to get a beer with your softball team, may cause you to question why you just spent a half-hour on a ferry and then another 15 minutes in a cab. But once the pies start arriving, lightly coated in olive oil but not too greasy, you’ll forget that you have to make the same journey to get home.
Denino’s trademark is its meatball, onions, and ricotta pizza (which Frank Bruni, the
New York Times restaurant critic, called “gloppy and chaotic,” though he gave Denino’s -– and the adventure of getting to Denino’s –- a overall favorable review). Denino's has changed significantly from the early days, gone is the 60's decor and cramped dining room, lit by christmas lights hidden behind faux wood shades. While much larger than it's previous incarnation, it's now far more worth getting take out, as the fantastic ambiance that made the tavern great, is gone. While you're there, don't fail to stop at Ralphs Ices across the street, renoun for their fantastic home-made ices. The line will be long, but is worth the wait.
Going to Denino’s is really about going to Denino’s; proving to your foodie friends that you are willing to sacrifice for the sake of expanding your culinary horizons.
